Series: Poetry Translation Workshops Summer Season

Our workshops are a great way to rekindle your love of poetry, see deeply into other cultures and meet like minded people. Get your season pass for our Summer workshops today.

The Poetry Translation Centre has been running regular collaborative translation workshops for almost 15 years. These friendly sessions offer poets, translators and lovers of culture the chance to discover new poems by living poets from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Translating at our workshops combines a close reading of an original poem with a lively conversation about poetry, language and culture as the group work together on the practical task of making a new translation that works as an English language poem.

There is no need to know the language being translated, just come along!

In six workshops held fortnightly between May and July, we will look at French poetry by a Congolese poet, kick off the PTC’s Georgian Tour with a session led by our Georgian translator Natalia Bukia-Peters, translate Spanish poetry from Paraguay, return to the work of Hebrew poet Roy Hassan, and the Arabic prose-poetry of Amjad Nassir, and translate from the West African language Yoruba for the first time.

Staring this season the PTC’s new Commissioning Editor Edward Doegar will lead the sessions as our poet-facilitator. Doegar is a published poet, editor and critic. His poems have appeared in various anthologies and journals, including Ten: The New Wave (Bloodaxe) and Granta. He is a consulting editor at The Rialto, a fellow of The Complete Works and his pamphlet, For Now, was published by clinic in 2017.

Our workshops are held in central London every second Tuesday from May 1st to July 10th. This season's bridge translators include:

Delaina Haslam (French), Natalia Bukia-Peters (Georgian), David Shook (Spanish), Micha Meyers (Hebrew), Atef Alshaer (Arabic) & Tọ́lá Ọ̀ṣunnúgà (Yoruba)

Buying a season pass is a good deal too.

The saving on a pass is equivalent to one free workshop. All workshop attendees get a Loyalty card so you can earn points towards free PTC poetry books with each workshop you attend.

The PTC is dedicated to offering their workshops for free to refugees and the unwaged. If this includes you, please book a season pass to let us know you are coming.
