Join activist, academic, writer and translator Helen Dixon as she introduces us to the works of Nicaraguan poet Carola Brantome, who is known as the co-founder of the Impossible Group of Harmful Writers (Image, 1991-93), of the literary magazine 400 Elefantes, created in 1995, and of the poetry booklet Papalotl (1998-99). She has won important literary prizes and her poems were included in anthologies published in Nicaragua, Mexico, Spain and the United States.

Carola Brantome – Poet

Carola Brantome has a degree in Social Communication from Central American University (UCA). She is part of the Nicaraguan Writers’ Center [CNE] and the Nicaraguan Association of Women Writers. She has won important literary prizes in Nicaragua, Mexico, Spain and the United States, including the First Mention of the Casa de las Américas Award in Cuba in 2004 and winning the Sole Prize of the I National Poetry Contest Written by Women in 2003.

Guest Translator – Helen Dixon

Helen Dixon (she/they) is a British-Nicaraguan queer feminist activist, academic and published writer/poet and translator, co-founder in Nicaragua of the feminist collective Grupo Venancia & the Centro Cultural Gaunuca. Now member of the Devils Dyke Network in Brighton. Helen teaches Creative and Reflective Practice at IDS, University of Sussex, while finishing a practice-based interdisciplinary PhD at the University of Brighton.

Workshop Facilitator – Helen Bowell

Helen Bowell is a London-based poet and co-director of Dead [Women] Poets Society. In 2020, she co-guest-edited an issue of Modern Poetry in Translation (focus on dead women poets). She is a Ledbury Poetry Critic and her debut pamphlet The Barman was published by Bad Betty Press in 2022.

There is no need to know the language being translated. Simply come along and share your passion for words, writing and understanding.
