Stefan Tobler joined us for the first of our new series of workshops in which we were introduced to the poetry of Conceição Lima from São Tomé and Príncipe who writes in Portuguese.

We translated four of Conceição Lima’s poems in the workshop. You can find them listed on her profile page.

As many of you will remember, Stefan has been a member of our workshops since 2004. He discovered the remarkable poet from Cape Verde, Corsino Fortes, whom Sean O’Brien and Daniel Hahn translated at length for our World Poets’ Tour in 2008. 2011 was an extraordinary year for And Other Stories, the small publishing company founded by Stefan, and his work as a translator is going from strength to strength. It was a real pleasure to welcome him back to lead another workshop for us and a great start to our 2012 workshop season.

Our poetry translation workshops are one of the PTC’s core activities. Through them we’ve first encountered some of the poets we’ve gone on to translate, publish and record at length. A significant number of the poets who’ve visited the UK to take part in our tours were introduced to us by a translator bringing their poems to a workshop.

The workshops are open to anyone who can contribute a translation of a poem by a living African, Asian or Latin American poet who has an established reputation in their own language.

Workshops are free but places are limited so advance booking is essential. If you’ve not attended one of our workshops before, please read this before booking a place.
