A unique intimate conversation with the latest writer published in the Poetry Translation Centre’s World Poet series: Eritrean poet Ribka Sibhatu. Alongside her translator and close collaborator André Naffis-Sahely, Ribka will read poems from her collection Aulò! Aulò! Aulò! André has spent ten years translating Ribka’s work into English to introduce it to new audiences. His dedication to making her voice heard has resulted in this new publication.
This small event held on Zoom will give you the chance to encounter Ribka and André as you might at a live discussion. The pair will talk about their work together, covering Ribka’s whole creative output, from her early rebellious lyric poems, her work preserving the fables of the Eritrean oral tradition and her more recent poems informed by her work as a passionate defender of refugee rights.
They will also discuss the translation process behind the book, with Ribka writing in Tigrinya and Ahmaric and translating herself into Italian and André further translating the work into English.
Tickets are £15 and this includes a copy of Aulò! Aulò! Aulò! If you already have your copy, don’t worry – you can buy a ticket on it’s own for £7. There are just 20 places available for this event.
We will make every attempt to get your book to you before the event so you have the chance to read it and learn more about Sibhatu’s work in advance. You will be sent a link to join the event after buying your ticket.
Ribka Sibhatu‘s tour has been co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
