On Wednesday 16th March, the Poetry Translation Centre hosted an evening with the distinguished Mexican poet, critic and translator, Pedro Serrano.
Pedro read his poems in Spanish and Sarah Maguire read his translations, specially commissioned for this event, that were jointly translated by Gwen MacKeith and Sarah. The readings were followed by Pedro discussing his work as a translator of contemporary British poetry: he co-edited the landmark anthology, La generación del cordero: Antología de la poesía actual en las Islas Británicas (The Lamb Generation) which brought together translations of 30 contemporary British poets (Trilce 2000). We talked about the impact the anthology had on Mexican poetry, and on Pedro’s own work.
It was a fascinating evening, thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by everyone able to attend.
