The Poetry Translation Centre is proud to present readings from two of the shortlisted titles from the Sarah Maguire Prize shortlist: Migrations by the late Mexican poet Gloria Gervitz and Unexpected Vanilla by Lee Hyemi from South Korea.
Join Lee Hyemi, her translator Soje, and Migrations translator Mark Schafer for bilingual readings from both of these fantastic collections, including archive footage of Gloria Gervitz. They will also be in conversation with Professor Duncan Large of the British Centre for Literary Translation. Published by Tilted Axis Press.
Migrations is an epic poem written between 1976-2020 by Gloria Gervitz (1943-2022). The nature of time, the subconscious, and the female body are explored in this piece with striking lyricism and dynamic compositions. Mark Schafer’s radiant translation from Spanish aptly puts Gervitz’s mind across, bringing her illustrious poetry to English.Published by New York Review of Books.
Written by one of South Korea’s exciting new female poets, Unexpected Vanilla takes on issues of feminism, discrimination, and body image. Lee Hyemi’s words are brought to an English-speaking audience by Soje, who successfully translates the silky yet biting lyrics that conjure up vivid imagery.
