Catastrophe/Galiilyo by Weedhsame is a poem of anguish about the displacement of the Somali people, western Europe’s response to the refugee crisis and a message of hope to refugees.
Weedhsame will perform the poem and others in Somali with English translation by Daljit Nagra, who co-translated the poem with Martin Orwin. We’ll also honour the late Somali legend Gaarriye, enjoy traditional music and dance and reflect on the necessity of translated poetry in today’s war-torn world. This event will have a live link up with Hargeysa Cultural Centre in Somaliland.
