David Huerta is a leading Mexican poet. He describes himself as “a writer of rather traditional poetry” and goes on to say “I would say that what I do is a poetry of images, metaphors, similes, metonym, of all kinds of tropes and figures of speech. Rather than the cult or devotion of the image, I am sure that through images we can still say things that help us live a little on the fringe of the market, if that’s possible.” The Poetry Translation Centre first translated David Huerta at our workshops in 2010 with the bridge-translator Tom Boll. We later brought out a chapbook of his poems translated singlehandedly by the UK poet Jamie McKendrick.
We are delighted to be returning to the work of this important Latin American poet with the help of guest-translator Adam Feinstein. Feinstein is an author, translator, journalist and noted Hispanist, best known for his biography Pablo Neruda: a passion for life which Harold Pinter called ‘a masterpiece’. Feinstein also launched Cantalao, a biannual magazine dedicated to Neruda’s life and work. Feinstein’s translations from Neruda, Lorca, Benedetti and others have appeared in many publications, including Modern Poetry in Translation and Agenda.
The workshops are open to all. There is no need to know the language being translated.
