Cürüm Crime

Cürüm

Çocuğun balonunu patlatmak suç değil
Ama yapamayacağina inandırmakta
cürüm tadı var yine de
Kötülük dışı şeylerin kötücül,
On emirde akla gelmedik şeylerin
günahın dik âlâsı olması gibi
Çünkü bilmeden yaptığın hatadır
yineleyip kaçtiğibsa günah
Hatada özür dilersin
günahta af

Crime

It’s no crime to pop a child’s balloon
But to make her think she can’t do it herself
that’s a crime
You can do bad things without being evil
If you obey the ten commandments
you can’t imagine the worst sins
Acting out of ignorance is always a mistake
Acting out repeatedly is a sin
You apologise for a mistake
You beg forgiveness for a sin

Crime

It is no crime to pop a child’s balloon
But to make her believe she can’t do it
has a criminal taste regardless
Similar to how things can be malevolent but not evil
How things can be unthinkable within the ten commandments
but can be the most sinful
Because when you act without intent you make a mistake
what you repeatedly do but get away with is a sin
You apologize for a mistake
you beg forgiveness for a sin

Some lines in this deceptively simple poem – such as the first four and the final couplet – were quite straightforward to translate. If you look at Canan’s literal version, you can see we didn’t change very much at all, apart from some vocabulary. But lines five and six were quite difficult to unpick because of the syntactical differences between Turkish and English, and also because of the complexity of Karin’s thought in those lines. Lines seven and eight also took a while for us to grasp. That said, the poem now looks very clear in its final version and is another example of how well Karin’s poems translate into English. One of her greatest strengths is the way she is able to posit such complex moral and philosophical issues with such apparent ease – as though what she is saying is inevitably true.
